Jordan is not particularly well known for its sense of humour and irony. Yet since so-called Islamic State arrived just beyond its borders two years ago, a generation of artists has started wielding a new weapon – of mass derision.
A few have braved the fear of reprisals to laugh openly at Daesh, and satirical sketches, cartoonists and theatre actors are creating a buzz on the Web, in what is a way for them of exorcising the violence of the terrorists and of raising awareness of how dangerous they are. We meet Al-Basheer and his show, Osama and his drawings, and a theatre troupe. They all share something in common - laughter and more laughter at a time when everything makes you want to cry.
