The island of Zanzibar, in the Indian Ocean, lies 50 kilometres from the African continent, and has been part of Tanzania since 1964. It offers travellers the scent of the stories Scheherazade recounted in the One Thousand and One Nights.

Its 700,000 inhabitants are among the most cosmopolitan and mixed in the world. The island has undergone an impressive mixing of cultures: it was a Portuguese colony before becoming the capital of the Omani Sultanate, and it subsequently became a British protectorate. People have always come from all over the world to trade in Zanzibar, including from China, the Arab countries, Africa, Europe and the United States.
