The port of Valparaíso in Chile is the city of funicular railways. These lifts facilitate the journey to districts located above the city, on slopes of over 70 degrees. The first funicular railway was opened in 1883. Today, of the 15 venerable “ascensores” - as they are referred to by the inhabitants of Valparaíso - only 9 are still working today. Lift mechanics carry out regular maintenance on them.
