Upending the codes of the era by framing his canvas like a photograph, Renoir produced a work in which a merry crowd is enjoying a summer’s day at one of the most popular open-air cafés of Paris.
Thierry Marx, a Parisian chef brought up in the Ménilmontant district plunges into the era of Renoir to concoct a highly colourful and jovial meal. Whereas Renoir plays with shade and light, blur and sharpness, the chef compiles a precise and luminous menu that could well have been served at the Maison Fournaise, the backdrop to the famous “Luncheon of the Boating Party”.
