The 3rd mandate of President Nkurunziza has ignited trouble: could Burundi descend into ethnic conflict?

In 2015, President Pierre Nkurunziza caused the country’s youth to take to the streets, and had to endure an attempted coup, having made a bid for a third mandate despite the fact that the constitution only authorises two.

Since then, he has been ruling Burundi, and the repression of dissenting areas is continuing, resulting in hundreds of victims. Former demonstrators have taken up arms, and attacks are on the increase. In the face of this resistance, the authorities are playing on the ethnic divide between the Hutu majority and the Tutsis. They are attacking the Tutsi minority as a priority, accusing them of being the sole group to combat the President.
