A report on board the “citizen boat” Aquarius, which rescues migrants in distress.

In 2015, 115,000 migrants left the Lebanese coast for Europe. 3,800 of them lost their lives during the crossing. The initiative SOS Méditerranée was set up to assist migrants in distress at sea. Volunteers, maritime professionals and humanitarian workers first boarded the  “citizen boat” Aquarius 6 months ago, and each worker spends a minimum of three weeks on board. The boat leaves from a port in Sicily and sails to the limits of Libyan territorial waters.
In late August 2016, Italian marines and humanitarian boats saved nearly 14,000 people over a period of just 5 days.
