“Being Polish is not a nationality, it is a destiny”. The filmmaker offers a unique perspective on his work and provides us with the keys to understanding it, shortly before his death, on October 9th, 2016.

A few months ago, filmmaker Andrzej Wolski sat down his illustrious compatriot Andrzej Wajda in an editing suite of the WAJDA SCHOOL (which he created in Warsaw 15 years ago) and showed him scenes from his films, which they chose together, to record a cinema lesson by the world famous master. Approaching the age of 90, Wajda’s mischievous blue-eyed gaze was as lively as ever, and the tone and flow of what he said still retained kindness, finesse, humour and mastery over his subjects of predilection. Reacting to these scenes, Wajda was able to recount in a unique way the “inner workings”’ of his work as a filmmaker while at the same time, placing the scenes in their historical and political context. His cinema lesson provides an opportunity to revist the intricacies of the post-World War 2 history of this part of Europe in a way that is both enlightening and fascinating.
Having viewed the film when it had been freshly edited, Andrzej Wajda wanted it to be the documentary of reference for his 90th birthday.
