On 24th October 2016, the French authorities triggered one of the largest population displacement operations of the last 20 years, evacuating the Calais Jungle, which for more than two years, had been home to up to 10,000 people living in fragile and often undignified conditions.

What caused the development of what had become France’s largest shantytown? This is the story of 3 days of operations during which about 7,000 people were evacuated to reception centres all over France.
The operation may have taken place without any major incidents, but it did nothing to solve the root of the migration issues that France and Europe are experiencing, and that Calais may well rediscover soon.
