As Syria's revolutionaries are pushed into their last retrenchments, caught between Russian-backed government forces and Islamist groups, this report asks what has become of the secular forces that took part in the early stages of the revolution.

In 2011, Ali was the leader of a Free Syrian Army group in the Edlib area. Now living on the Turkish side of the border, along with some of his men and the whole of his family, he is devastated by the turn events have taken. One of their former comrades, Ghazi, has joined the so-called Islamic State. Ali explains how it happened and relates how they gradually lost all hope of a secular revolution. He says that Syria is being ravaged by gangs of suicidal teenagers manipulated by ISIL, and lays the blame squarely on Europe's shoulders: "All this is Europe's fault. The Europeans let us down."
