At the Jean Quarré reception center in Paris, social workers do their best every day to maintain the morale of refugees.

Packed into makeshift camps around Place Stalingrad in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, thousands of migrants were evicted on the order of City Hall. They were sent to several reception centers, including the Jean Quarré emergency center, where they were taken into the care of the Emmaüs Solidarité NGO.

Karine and Tiphaine go to great lengths to help these 145 young migrants, mostly from Sudan and Afghanistan. They help with administrative processes, medical appointments, submissions to courts, and also teach French through socio-cultural activities. Despite the administrative obstacles, interminable procedures and the migrants’ despair, the two women try to relieve their distress by bringing a touch of common humanity into daily life.
