Donald Trump's election hit the Californians like a tidal wave. California, where Hillary Clinton polled over 60% of the popular vote, has the biggest population of any state in the USA, but the Californian result was not enough to reverse the nationwide outcome.

In the aftermath of Trump's election, some Californians started to have thoughts of secession. A Californian independence movement is gathering momentum. Even if it does not come to that, the Golden State intends to carry on doing things the Californian way, blissfully ignoring policy directives emanating from Washington.
California is the world's sixth biggest economy. A multicultural bubble that blithely floats along, buoyed up by free expression, live-and-let-live attitudes, world-famous universities, a thriving high-tech  industry and investment in renewable energies, until now the state liked to think of itself as a model for the rest of America.

Trump's election signalled the rejection of that model by Middle America. In high unemployment areas like the coal towns of West Virginia, the Californian model seems increasingly irrelevant. The predominant mood here is one of bitterness. People feel they have been let down by elites who are out of touch with the day-to-day reality of their lives. The chasm between California and the rest of the country is wider than ever.
