Since August 2016, some 19 oil wells have been set ablaze by jihadis of so-called Islamic State to slow the advance of Iraqi forces in their offensive to retake Mosul.

Only 10 of these have been totally extinguished. Yet, Iraqi fire-fighters are waging a daily combat to bring these fires under control in appalling working conditions, amidst toxic fumes which leave the surrounding area covered in a thick layer of soot.
According to the UN environmental program, crude oil fires produce a wide range of pollutants. What will be the economic and human consequences of these attacks?
