Almost 90% of the people of Jakarta are practicing Muslims. But the rise of radical Islam is threatening the future of the country.

The second round of the election for Jakarta’s next governor reveals the depth of religious intolerance that has grown over recent years and the growing influence of Islamists on society there.
The incumbent governor, known as Ahok, a Christian from the Chinese minority and standing for re-election faced Anies Baswedan, the former Minister of Education, and an Islamic hardliner. This election was a test for religious tolerance in the world’s biggest Muslim country.
