After the destruction by so-called Islamic State of the museum in Mosul and ancient ruins in Nineveh, Nimrud and Hatra in Iraq, then Palmyra in Syria, concern turned to Libya.

UNESCO has classified five Libyan sites on the list of “at risk” masterpieces.
Some 120 kilometers east of the capital Tripoli lies the ancient Roman city of Leptis Magna, listed as a World Heritage Site. The ruins cover some 50 hectares, and include a hippodrome, a basilica, and a 15,000-seat amphitheater with a spectacular view across the Mediterranean. The site is patrolled daily by around 50 armed volunteers, eager to protect this precious historic monument.
