A singular folk live on the waters of Lake Inle. Driven out by war four centuries ago, the Intha have raised homes on stilts so they can fish and farm.

Their floating gardens produce tomatoes that are prized all across the country. The lake lives at the rhythm of their teak embarkations floating against a backdrop of Buddhist temples. But beyond the pretty picture, reality is becoming increasingly bleak.  The frail balance between the lake’s natural resources and their exploitation is in danger.
Fertilizers, pesticides and other pollutants as well as the unregulated development of tourism threaten the local ecosystem. Furthermore, mountain deforestation is causing silt to slide in the water. This process has reduced the lake’s surface by a third since the 30s.
According to certain specialists, Lake Inle might be doomed to disappear in 50 to 75 years.
