In Iraq, the government forces are still fighting against ISIS’ last pockets of resistance. In the liberated territories, the identification of the thousands of victims in Daesh’s mass graves has only begun.

Dozens of mass graves have been identified in zones that were previously controlled by Daesh. Some of them have been open by military personnel or civilians, in a hurry to find the bodies of their loved ones.
Nonetheless, those mass graves are crime scenes that need to be protected and analyzed. Between scientific police and archeology, a very precise protocol is necessary to optimize the chances of identification of the victims. The information gathered from the mass graves’ sites and the bodies themselves may one day enable the Iraqi justice or the International Criminal Court to judge those responsible of the slaughters.
This process is coordinated by the ICMP – the International Commission for Missing Persons. For the Iraqi society, the stakes are huge: they need to lay the foundation for durable national reconciliation.
