To protect themselves from the system’s castaways – considered as delinquents by the Peruvian upper class – the inhabitants of Las Casuarinas have built a 10 kilometers long and 3 meters high wall with the support of local authorities.

About two thirds of the population lives in Pamplona Alta on the outskirts of Lima without gas, electricity or running water in tin-roofed wooden shacks. On this side of the wall, a house costs less than three hundred dollars.
On the other side – in Las Casuarinas and La Molina – asphalt roads bordered by lush green spaces lead to upscale villas with gardens and swimming pools.
The separation contributes to a social segregation – territorial but also racial – widening the gap between the haves and have-nots even further.
