The Great Barrier Reef is under threat: the construction project for the biggest coal mine in the world would spell an ecological disaster...

On one hand the country has explicitly committed to an energetic transition: the share of coal in the domestic electrical production has consistently decreased for renewable energies’ benefit. But on the other hand Australia is defending its rank as lead coal exporter by all means. Including by supporting the construction project of a new giant mine in a yet-untapped zone in northern Queensland, right in front of the Great Barrier Reef. In the name of this jewel’s defense – and seeing how it is already under threat by the rise of temperatures – ecologist groups are trying to make the project fail. A fight made even harder by the locals’ hopes for job creation.
