One year after the election of Donald Trump, the wounds of History are still open: the ghosts of the American Civil War still haunt the memory of many Americans.

There was a dramatic change of pace in August 2017 in Charlottesville, Virginia where far right radicals had gathered. Among the anti-racist counter-protesters, a young woman was killed by a car driving into the crowd. From then on, people of color and white supremacists have vilified each other.
On one side, white Americans from its heartland who carried Trump to the presidency show their support for the Confederates’ cause against a racist backdrop; on the other, African-Americans who are offended by the legacy of slavery and call for the removal of its vestiges. Trump’s ambivalent speeches saying both sides are cut from the same cloth only add fuel to the fire of provocations.
We are seeing the resurgence of a split in American identity – both “racial” and historic – that we had thought definitely closed up.
