Winds over 350 km/h, 20 % of the buildings destroyed… The locals had never seen such a violent and unrelenting hurricane in memory – about 95 % of the island was ravaged; in the calm after the storm, everything must be rebuilt.

Two months after hurricane Irma raged through Saint Martin, the pupils are finally back in school. The live issue is now to rebuild a territory whose great vulnerability the disaster revealed – but not any old how. A local urban plan that is more adapted to resisting the next hurricanes is under study. Risk areas where unplanned housing clustered will be subject to severe restrictions.
Saint-Martin’s economy relies heavily on tourism and its unemployment rate has soared to 33 %. For the hotel industry – which has already lost part of its customer base to Saint Barthelemy and Martinique over the last few years – this is yet another glancing blow. The French government has announced financial measures rising up to €62 million in hopes to relaunch the local economy.
