Perched at 2100m, the garden of the Col du Lautaret is the highest botanical garden in Europe. In 1899, Jean-Paul Lachmann – professor in botany at the University of Grenoble – creates the garden to study the mountain flora and test plants’ acclimatization in high mountains.
Today the garden serves as an observatory dedicated to the preservation of alpine plants. The garden’s design uses the mineral elements and highlights the plants in different types of rock – notably in limestone and shale. Botanists can thus observe plants and mountain flowers in their preferred habitat. The garden of Lautaret has accomplished the feat of gathering the mountains’ riches in such a small treasure chest.
