On Sweden’s Eastern coast, the city of Uppsala is famous for its university – the oldest one in Scandinavia – and for one of its most prestigious professors, Carl Von Linné. The botanist, born in 1707 created a magnificent garden in downtown Uppsala – strong with a collection of over 1600 plant species.
During the famous Age of Enlightenment, just like a Diderot classifying words in his newly created Encyclopedia, Linné starts what would be his life’s work: indexing, naming and classifying all the plant species. He invented a new way to classify them according to their sexual organs. Thus the number of stamen – the male organ – determines the rank of the plant in the garden. Thanks to Linné, Uppsala has become a world reference in the domain of botanical sciences.
