The worship of Buddha in Burma is as much a recollection as it is a popular jubilation. In order to meet all of the Asian continent's Buddhist temples and monasteries’ demands, the craftsmen of Mandalay – the country's second biggest city – build thousands of white marble Buddha statues.
The quarries near Sagyin provide a fine-grained rock; they also employ almost all of the village's inhabitants. The country remained closed-off from the rest of the world for a long time. But U Po Ther – one of the region's best sculptors – now negotiates with patrons all across the globe from his cellphone. Buddha's depictions and measurements differ from country to country and each posture has a different meaning.
