On Chiloe island, when you move to another house, you don’t need to pack your boxes, you just bring the entire house with you. This is a South American tradition named “minga” in which the entire village participates.

Minga means “sharing the work to help”. It is an indigenous practice that is widespread throughout South America. It applies to all sorts of collective tasks from harvesting, to building, construction work and house moving. The transfer of a house is a type of minga that is specific to the island of Chiloe. This unusual house move involves a collective celebration that mobilises the entire community. Aracadio wants to move his century-old house to a nearby hill with the help of some neighbours, a few globe-trotters and powerful cattle. Will his house survive the journey ?
