Every year, to mark their departure from flooded zones, the Lozi people organise a grand ritual ceremony named « Kuomboka », which means “leaving the water to reach dry land”.

The Zambezi, in Southern Africa, is one of the world’s most majestic rivers. It causes important floods which influence the lives of then men and animals that inhabit its shores. This phenomenon is becoming more and more acute, year after year, with global warming. The Lozi people, who have lived on the Zambezi’s fertile plains for two centuries, are forced to leave these inundated zones every year. Towards the end of April, at the very latest, the last dwellings situated in higher altitudes must also be evacuated, after having been protected against snakes and crocodiles. This is a difficult moment during which the community’s solidarity is more important that ever. The « Kuomboka » ceremony organised on this occasion takes place in the presence of the queen.
