A travel to Crete to discover the secrets and boons of the Carob fruit – the tree has renewed the local economy. Rich in fibers, vitamins, calcium and iron, the carob powder offers a substitute to cocoa that is without fats or caffeine.

The olive tree is not the only fruit bearing tree making the Greek island's wealth. Long neglected, the Carob – which produces long brown pods called carobs or Pythagoras beans – is now very popular. Carob cookies, jams, syrups and alimentary pastes have enjoyed a growing success; and the Creta Carob company's rapid growth is further proof of it. It was founded by Elias Manousakas. Back from Athens where the youth mainly enjoy bleak prospects for the future, Natalia Louraki dreams of contributing to the development of responsible tourism around this fruity treasury.
