These past years, thanks to the efforts of a few ornithologists, vultures have reappeared in the Vercors and the Verdon. Let’s go and discover the mountainous landscapes of the South of France and these amazing birds of prey….
In the early XXth century, man had almost exterminated these giant birds from the European skies. Since a few years, thanks to the commitment of passionate ornithologists, one can now admire Griffon vultures, Cinereous vultures, Bearded vultures in the Vercors and the Verdon gorges, where they glide over breath-taking landscapes. Feeding exclusively off rotting carcasses, these vultures have been of great help to shepherds in the region. Today still, sheep breeders use them to dispose of carcasses deposited on special plots for that purpose.
