Thanks to puppet-shadow theatre (wayang kulit), these Indonesian puppets have perpetuated century old popular legends from epic folk tales.

During long nocturnal performances at official events and private festivities such as weddings, the puppeteers (dalang) take audiences on a journey in a world of tormented kings, beautiful princesses, courageous warriors and Hindu deities. To do this, they agitate their leather puppets in front of a projector which reflects their shadows onto a white canvas, and lend their voices to the different characters. The dalang are very respected and considered as masters in their discipline. Gondo Suharno is one of them. He produces himself very regularly in Java with his troop of musicians, dancers and assistants. He also trains students who wish to learn his art such as Ganesh, whom we follow while his first puppets are being fabricated.
