Built by British engineers in the XIXth century, this Sri-Lankan railroad was initially designed for transporting cinnamon, pepper, tea and coffee. It is one of the most scenic routes in the world, connecting the mountains from the hinterland to the capital city.

It does however present some risks for passengers: on the section between Nawalapitiya and Badulla, the train crosses several bridges, nearly 40 tunnels and borrows sharp bends that culminate up to 1900 meters in altitude. Only the most experienced train drivers can venture all the way up. Accompanied by his colleague, Rodrigo Piyarathne, who has worked for 26 years on Sri-Lankan railroads, is driving the train on this particular section, for the first time. If he performs well, he will be allowed to drive alone on this part of the railroad that boasts the most spectacular scenery.
