At the heart of the Cape in South Africa, fruits and vegetables grow aplenty in the garden of Babylonstoren. Ancient and forgotten species co-exist with contemporary botanical collections – a goal as poetic as it is ambitious.

Implanted on a domain whose origins trace back to the 17th century, the garden of Babylonstoren was created in 2007. It is open to the public and owned by a passionate botanist and historian – Koos Bekker. He is an Afrikaner, a descendant of the first Dutch colons. His garden is a living testament to a part of South African history. It is a string of rectangular plots with different themes such as the indigenous plants patch, the great orchard, the prickly pear trees labyrinth, the citrus patch or the experimental patch. Babylonstoren’s structures are inspired from the first South-African food garden – which was implanted in Cape Town in in the 17th century.
