At the heart of the Guianan forest, Cacao village seems to be unaffected by the passing of time. It is populated with Hmongs, refugees from Laos who crossed the oceans before coming to settle here right after the Vietnam War.

There were 500 of them in 1977. They had hoped to come to France; instead they found a green hell that they patiently deforested and cultivated. Nowadays 60 tons of fruits and vegetables leave Cacao each week to find their way onto the Cayenne market’s stalls.
The “Barefoot Lords” have become Guyana’s market gardeners. They managed to preserve their identity, their customs and their traditional garbs. Forty years after their arrival, the Hmongs have transformer their corner of equatorial jungle into a “Cloud Garden” while staying true to themselves – 15,000 km from their homeland.
