After leaving their village to the flames and being exiled to Bangladesh, Nour-Mohamed and his family now struggle for their survival. They are among the 650.000 Rohingyas who fled Burma and settled in the refugee camps on the western bank of the river Naff. In their journey, they have lost a child…

There are about 8.000 isolated minors in the Kutupalong camps. Whether they are simply lost or orphaned, the NGOs on the ground that prioritize helping these separated children are sparse. Hundreds of them are being taken care of by Hefazat e Islam – the most powerful Islamist organization in the country. They are “taught” in one of the 1.500 Koranic schools it brags to have built in the camps – schools that also host thousands of refugee children.
Like Nour-Mohamed and his kin, Rohingya refugees see their future hanging in the balance of the deal signed between Bangladesh and Burma. If it ends up being enforced, it could enable these stateless refugees to return to their home soil. But it is a very optimistic scenario that almost no-one believes in anymore.
