Cow slaughtering is a sensitive issue in this 80% Hindu country. Simple rumors about it happening can lead to deadly violence. Delve into the sacred cow country – torn between economic benefits and nationalist political agenda.

Only 7 states out of 29 allow slaughtering. A paradoxical situation when India is the biggest beef meat exporter in the world. That meat comes from black buffaloes – who it is legal to slaughter.
Nonetheless, advocating for the cows’ welfare – raised first and foremost for their milk – is still a very popular political stance in rural India. It could enable the BJP – the nationalist party currently in power – to win the next elections in 2019.
The risk is to set apart the 15% of Muslim Indians who run most of the slaughterhouses throughout the country. 61 attacks causing the death of 28 Indians – most of whom were Muslim – were already registered. These were motivated by rumors that they ate beef.
