In November 2016, after more than 50 years of conflicts, the peace accords between the FARC guerrilla group and the Colombian government – signed by President Juan Manuel Santos – anticipated the guerrilla's return to civilian life.

This historic agreement with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia was supposed to guarantee durable peace in the country. However, two years later the violence has not subsided in the countryside; hopes for peace are severely frustrated.
The agrarian question is the main bone of contention – it prompts violent power struggles. Former members of the FARC were disappointed by the opportunities of returning to civilian life in acceptable conditions; they have thus joined the ELN (National Liberation Army) who are fighting over coca cultures, precious woods and the illegal exploitation of gold mines in territories abandoned by the FARC.
