In the shanties where a million stateless Rohingyas have found shelter from the monsoon rains, thousands of women live in shame, closed off – they are haunted by the memories of sexual violence they have endured only a year ago.

Humanitarians have tracked a significant increase in births among the refugees – precisely nine months after the ethnic cleansing perpetrated by the Burmese army and the Buddhist village militias against the Muslim Rohingyas. Most of these women are now being ostracized by their families and many of them were repudiated by their husband – among those who chose to keep their newborn baby.
Some sort of survival instinct seems to have pushed this conservative community to adopt some of these children of shame as their own. The babies are sometimes entrusted to other families; some women like Solima have chosen to raise these unwanted children and try to offer them a decent future.
