Inflation, austerity, mass layoffs: Argentina faces yet another economic crisis. Industry workers are the first victims. The inflation could reach as high as 48% this year, the national currency has lost 50% of its value and they contracted a loan of 57 million dollars from the IMF.
The country's bankruptcy in 2001 is still a vivid memory. Many had lost their job, sometimes their savings too – poverty had increased dramatically. To face the 2018 crisis, President Macri enacted a plan supervised by the IMF, it involves: scrapping half the Ministries, a tax on the exportation of agricultural products, a tax hike, lower pensions and salaries. The country is in recession and the population suffers from the effects of inflation on a daily basis. For instance, the price of flour has risen by 144% and chicken by 50%. Many shops and businesses close down or fire most of their staff.
