30 years after the abolition of the slave trade by the United Kingdom, Turner gave us a broader and deeper understanding of oppression. He painted the portrait of an England that embraced the industrial revolution’s new economic models – they paved the way for the globalization that was to come; and whose chains would not be any less bloody.

Practiced since the dawn of time, slavery expanded at an unprecedented rate from the 16th century onwards with the African slave trade – Europeans deported them in droves to America’s massive plantations. The United Kingdom was the first country to abolish its African slave trade at the turn of the 19th century. Since then, it has not hesitated to flaunt the British Fleet’s might to attack foreign slave ships across the globe.
