Angola had one of the highest growth rates in Africa. It is now in deep economic crisis despite its oil revenues. While 55% of the population has to live on less than a dollar a day, bad governance because of corruption eats at the justice system.
All eyes are on Joao Lourenço – whose election as president back in September 2017 came as no surprise. This former apparatchik promised to fight corruption and kick start the country's economy – one of the poorest in the world despite its high oil revenues.
After 38 years of a repressive and unchallenged regime, president Eduardo Dos Santos has left a fragile country with a sluggish economy – battered by the drop in oil prices and the chronic nepotism at the top of the state which had become the Dos Santos family's exclusive preserve.
