Integrated into Ukraine, but mainly populated by Russians, Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014. The construction, within spectacular deadlines, of a bridge of nearly 20 kilometers spanning the Kerch Strait, linking the Azov Sea to the Black Sea was a symbol of this forced incorporation.
A market of 230 billion rubles – more than €3 billion – paid by the Russian Federal budget, this toll-free bridge, inaugurated in May 2018 by Vladimir Putin, will be joined by a second bridge, for trains this time, at the end of this year.
The grandeur of this project is in the image of Russia – which is still subject to European Union sanctions – it is a message to Ukraine and Western countries, to show off its greatness and power.
