Every year on 24 May, traveling folk from all around Europe come to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in southern France for a great festive ritual to honor Saint Sara, their patron, who was a persecuted servant. The travelers identify with her.

For a week, between 8-10,000 travelers flock to this town in the Camargue, moving into the streets, squares, and seafront.
The Pilgrimage of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is the most important religious act for the Gypsy community. The welcome they receive in many places is very poor, so having the opportunity to meet up with other travelers to pray in their own way and complete their devotions is very important to them. This is a ritual about identity where Gypsy pride can be expressed.
