Every year in Tangbyon, an important ritual sees thousands of Burmans come to ask their mediums to dance, so they may contact the Nats, spirits that are able to offer them a better future

Daw Kyar Ma has been taking part in this ritual for more than 20 years, but this year, she has come to ask the Nats to heal her husband who is having problems with his pancreas.

Medium Ko Myint Thu will dance for her and transmit her prayer to the Nats.
In Myanmar, most mediums are men, transvestites, or homosexuals. Literally, “Nat Kadaw” means “husband of Nat”. In this country, where homosexuality is still illegal, the ritual provides a space where homosexuals, transvestites and transgender people can exist without hiding.
