On Cape Verde Island, uncontrolled sand mining has been officially illegal since 2010. But for many women, it remains the only way to feed their children or allow them to study. They sell their meager loot for a miserable sum to unscrupulous manufacturers who use it to make cinder blocks.

Isolated, 700 kilometres off the Senegalese coast, Cape Verde Island has no natural resources. One in four people live on less than two euros a day.
The same actions are repeated from generation to generation by the women of Cape Verde. Every day, they rake the beaches. Bucket and shovel in hand they scrape, gather and filter the sand: this volcanic archipelago's black gold.
Now, some beaches have been completely destroyed. The black gold has run out. Only pebbles remain. The environmental consequences are disastrous: accelerated coastal erosion, depletion of fish stocks and salt pollution of groundwater and the surrounding fields.

Gentle spouses, housewives confined to housework, sex slaves. It has long been thought that women in the Islamic State were only victims forced to obey their husband, brother or father. This overly reductive image does not reflect reality.

Like men and children, it appears that Daesh has fully integrated these women, Arabs or Westerners, into its mode of operation. For two years, we met with a dozen women of ISIS who played an active role in the terrorist organization. Most of them are still in Iraq or Syria. Some have escaped to neighbouring Turkey. All of them hide and try to forget a painful and often shameful past. Among them are members of the Hisba, the Islamic police known for its cruelty, women of fighters who followed their men out of love or coercion, mothers, torturers, nurses, teachers. All these women, after months of denial, fear and hesitation, ended up talking without restraining. In the course of confidences is emerging a world of oppression, terror, privation, hypocrisy and regrets.
“Woman of Isis” this new documentary film is the third part of a triptyque that tells what really was the Islamic State is really like from the inside, through the voice of its citizens, the very people who made it work. This time, the role of women is recounted through interviews mainly carried out in Raqqa and Mosul, the two capitals of the caliphate, left in ruins today.

These journalists are aged from 10 to 17 and produce a newspaper that is unique in the world, made by and for street children. Jyoti is their editor-in-chief. She never sat on school benches and successively begged, stole and collected garbage... before working for Balaknama, "The Children's Voice".

They now print 8,000 copies in Hindi and English; the newspaper is entirely managed by children and highlights positive initiatives. Yet it does not hesitate to address police brutality, drug problems and forced labor, to the point of moving local authorities on some of the subjects denounced in its pages. A great achievement for a publication whose journalists’ average age is 14...
Balaknama has changed the fate of the 400 children who have had a hand in its success since its launch in 2003. Jyoti got over her drug addiction and would like to continue to help other kids in trouble. Deepak, 16, has resumed his studies; after years of working at the factory, he would like to like to become a TV presenter someday.
Every single one of them is proud to take up this daunting task with renewed pride: to carry the voice of the 100,000 street children of Delhi.

In northern Mali, a region plagued by Islamic terrorism, G5 Sahel patrols are fighting back against jihadis. Since 2012, Islamic extremists linked to al-Qaeda have taken control of northern Mali by exploiting a Tuareg separatist uprising.

Their control of the region – combined with the weakness of Bamako's power and the fragility of the Sahel region – is a cause for concern. Despite French intervention and the deployment of joint forces from five Sahelian countries, terrorist groups still control a large part of the region and are increasingly influential in Burkina Faso and Niger.
How do African states fight terrorism over such a vast territory? How are the actions on the ground implemented? The task is daunting and uncertain in this high-tension area.

Jair Bolsonaro, the newly elected Brazilian president is worrisome. He longs for the worst days of the military dictatorship and has a habit of making racist, misogynistic and homophobic provocations. Nevertheless, his electoral base is young and very vocal online.

Bolsonaro intends to shape this youth in his own image – starting from childhood. He promised to create new military colleges run by the army, where patriotism and nationalism will be the pillars of education.
The new Brazilian president's first battle is ideological: to win it, he surrounded himself with particularly violent and unapologetic lobbyists – like the supporters of the "Nonpartisan School" movement. The latter considers public school teachers as "Marxist ideologues" who must be "eradicated".
Supported by young pro-Bolsonaro representatives, this movement does not hesitate to post pictures of teachers judged too left-wing on social networks. Even if it means ruining their lives...

The Islamic State has reached the end of its territorial existence. The last days of the self-proclaimed caliphate are played out in eastern Syria; a third of the country is controlled by the Kurdish administration, which is not recognized by anyone.

We met men and women who testify to the wounds left by 5 years of jihadist rule:

Samira and Hafida, two Belgian and Dutch jihadists who live in Roj camp, waiting for their countries to decide their fate.
Bahoz and Simco, commanders of the Syrian Democratic Forces, a Kurdish and Arab alliance, who have been in all the battles against the Islamic State organization. They have led the final battle against the last jihadist pockets of resistance on the Baghouz front – at the confines of Syria and Iraq – alongside the coalition forces that would soon leave.
Mahmoud Kero, a Kurdish civil servant with an impossible task: to manage the camps where tens of thousands of jihadists, wounded civilians and exhausted children have been arriving for weeks.

Venezuela is in trouble. The supporters of a revolution that is already twenty years old face off against the proponents of liberalism. On one side, President Maduro, Chavez's heir – supported by Iran, Cuba, Russia or Turkey. On the other hand, a young self-proclaimed president, Juan Guaidó – supported by Donald Trump and a majority of EU countries.

This new would-be president has the support of millions of Venezuelans who chose to leave the country – a support justified by his fierce criticism of the current regime's alleged incompetence in dealing with the country's corruption and economic troubles. In a country that is already weakened economically, not a week goes by without a violent protest – the confrontations have already taken 200 lives in four years. The two sides are not anywhere near ready to bury the hatchet. Director Gonzalo Arijon has been following the Chavist revolution since its beginnings. Over the span of ten days, he has directed this bittersweet chronicle through a torn up country...

In Moscow, religious power and political power work hand in hand in building Russia’s new ultra conservative and imperial identity. Kirill, the patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church is Putin’s ally. He leads his church, influences Russian society and participates in international debates.

The Russian Church is back : helped by Putin who saw in this institution the useful cement of a Russia without future plan after the fall of Soviet Union, the church tries to impose its views on social issues in its country and wants to play a parallel diplomatic role abroad, to get back to its status under the Czars.  Exceptionally, Kirill, the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia, has agreed on being filmed during a year, and takes us to meetings with Russian political leaders he invites in his Moscow cathedral, with the Palestinian president Mahmood Abbas, or above all with Putin, with who he parades ad infinitum. Their plan ?  Restore Holy Russia, propose a reactionary alternative to the western powers, that both denounce even to caricature.

Who is Justin Trudeau? Mr Nice Guy welcoming syrian refugees and celebrating diversity, or your next door politician signing pipelines that are wrecking the canadian environment and trampling the rights of Canadian First Nations?

By smartly combining the absence of ideology and the power of both data mining and digital campaigning Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau embodies the “XXIth century liberalus homo politicus”. The advent of Donald Trump has awaken a debate in Canada. Is this young, bright, politically correct and good looking Prime Minister well prepared to lead a fight of this magnitude?
