This film recounts the colorful career of the last tycoon of Hollywood’s Golden Age and explores the turbulent but creatively rewarding relationships between Spiegel and Hollywood giants John Huston, David Lean, Elia Kazan, Marlon Brando and Katherine Hepburn.

Sam Spiegel fled the specter of Nazi Germany in 1933 to become the most enigmatic and controversial film producer in the history of Hollywood, the equal of Selznick, Goldwyn, Zanuck and Mayer. He is the only person to win three Oscars as sole producer on a feature film, for On The Waterfront (1954), The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) and Lawrence of Arabia (1962).  He also produced the iconic film The African Queen with Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn (1951).

Spiegel was a pioneer of independent filmmaking whose movies stacked up dozens of Academy Awards. He was considered to be a storytelling producer who was passionate about the human spirit overcoming adversity, and chose complex plots that served a charismatic hero struggling against the world.  He had a refugee mentality, which fed his desire to survive irrespective of the difficulties he encountered and took great risks with producing in terms of the size of the production and its physical distance from Hollywood. For a number of years, Spiegel used SP Eagle as his professional name to avoid creditors and the authorities - he had a criminal record for passing bad cheques and, for a time, was an illegal immigrant to the US.

She had to fight many wars to go from the little orphan maid to the famous tailor celebrated worldwide. A portrait of one of the most iconic figures of the 20th century.

War against social order, against conventions, against men, against bankers, against her contemporaries.  A war against the entire world.
By borrowing from men their money and their style, she lived a relentless battle, a merciless fight to exist on her own and to go down in history. Socialite, fashion designer, spy, and rebellious old lady, Chanel constantly reinvented herself throughout her existence, creating her own legend. A Broadway musical was even dedicated to her while she was alive.

Coco was also a witness of times that had disappeared, the Belle Époque and the Roaring Twenties, leaving her alone and bitter at the twilight of her life. A portrait of one of the most iconic figures of the 20th century that was greater than life itself.

By the end of 1917 a regiment of African-American soldiers had joined the trenches in France. By fighting with the “poilus”, under French command, they discovered both the horrors of war and another world entirely; a world where racial segregation did not exist.

The 15th regiment of the New York National Guard was exclusively made up of black soldiers. Nicknamed the Harlem Hellfighters, this American unit was to be the most decorated of the Second World War. It was also the one that fought on the front line for the longest time: 191 days.
It was not only liberty and democracy that they came to defend with fieriness in France, but also racial equality. By fighting on the Old Continent, the descendants of slaves hoped to win another war – one that was waged in their own country: the war against segregation.
These African-American soldiers hoped that when they came back home they would finally be considered as full-fledged US citizens. Here is their story.

What exactly lies behind Arnold Schwarzenegger’s success story? From post-war Austria to the podiums of bodybuilding; from Hollywood to the political arena; his journey is a mirror held up to our era; a legend that, for the last 40 years, has reflected our dreams as well as our nightmares.

Now, nearly forty years after Terminator, everyone has learned to say “Arnold Schwarzenegger”. And no one is astonished anymore. His story has travelled the globe; one of the last great legends of America– “The leaving, breathing incarnation of the American dream”, as he himself likes to put it. It is the story of a young Austrian fascinated by grandeur that became the number one bodybuilder, the number one Hollywood actor, and the governor of California. Most importantly, it is the story of uncommon drive: that of a self-made man who knew how to patiently mold reality into the shape of his childhood dream.
And if this story is familiar to us today, and if nothing here astonishes us anymore, that is perhaps because the world has taken on his image.  It is perhaps because he came, like the Terminator himself, to predict our future. Today, bodybuilding has become common practice, newspapers continuously talk of our cyborg future, Donald Trump is in the White House and reality seems to have turned irreversibly into a spectacle. The story of Arnold Schwarzenegger is also our own: that of an era governed by the law of images, more fascinated than ever by the cult of ambition, impatient to be done with humanity in order to finally replace it with the reign of the machines.
So it is time, now that Schwarzenegger is over 70 and no longer looks much like a cyborg, to tell the story of the making of this legend that can speak volumes of our dreams, and also our nightmares.
