"Cholitas" are the proud names of the female skaters who race and pirouette in colourful, multi-layered pleated skirts and black bowlers in La Paz, the world's highest terrain.

They want to rebel against the stigma still attached to the name of the descendants of indigenous tribes. With their daring jumps in traditional costumes, the young women are riding against racism and machismo and want to show that everything is open to the Cholitas of today. But there are still stones in their path to a free, self-determined life.

The village of Guanabara III can only be reached by boat; it is secluded in the Amazon jungle in northern Brazil.

Sao Paolo de Olivenca in the state of Amazonas is the next largest village, not far from the border triangle of Brazil, Colombia and Peru. The Tikuna ethnic group lives here, and the village's headman Kazike Fernandes can hardly remember when it started or why they did it in the first place: "We abandoned our naturally planted gardens and we went into slash-and-burn agriculture". The Tikuna are now known throughout the region for their "Aula Viva", the living classroom. Whole village communities come to them to learn in the classroom.
