Saint-Charles is a "new town" on the outermost fringe of the Paris suburbs, where the forest is receding as more and more new residential blocks spring up. When the last surviving local industry – the lingerie factory – shuts down, its skilled female workers refuse to knuckle under.

The small town’s workers unite: led by Nathalie, who used to fantasize about designing her own lingerie collection, and Selma, who has just found out she is pregnant with her third child, they decide to organize an amateur wrestling tournament and make money by taking bets.
Supported by their loyal friend Céline, they intend to fight with all their might to keep their dignity.
 

In 1981, it was still illegal to be homosexual in France. Today, same-sex marriage is recognized and it paved the way for adoption. PROUD tells the story of Charles, Victor and Diego, three generations of the same family who emerge as symbol of their time.

Saint-Charles is a "new town" on the outermost fringe of the Paris suburbs, where the forest is receding as more and more new residential blocks spring up. When the last surviving local industry, the lingerie factory, shuts down, its skilled female workers refuse to knuckle under.

Led by Nathalie, who used to fantasize about designing her own lingerie collection, and Selma, who has just found out she is pregnant with her third child, they decide to organize an amateur wrestling tournament and make money by taking bets. Encouraged by their friend Céline, Nathalie and Selma set themselves the challenge of making it through to the finals. But at the last minute, an unexpected contender joins the fray: Céline's husband has been injured in a terrible car accident, and she enters the tournament in a desperate bid to keep her family's finances afloat. 

May 1981. Victor, 17, divides his time between his girlfriend, Aurélie, and the building site where he helps out his father, Charles, the site manager. On the site, Victor is sent into a spin by Selim, the foreman’s son. Their relationship is impetuous, driven by the instincts of youth.

Despite being the first to defend the values of openness and tolerance embodied by the Left in this period of presidential elections, Charles doesn’t want to think his own son is different.
Charles throws Selim off the site and reports his behavior to his father. By way of reprisal, Selim gets his own back on Victor. He doesn’t want to go against the expectations of his family or society. Instead, he rewrites history. At high school, the rumor starts to spread that Victor is a faggot... 

Michel Serrero, a sedentary police officer, raises his daughter Clara singlehandedly. He suffers from severe hallucinations, and finds out they are symptoms of an incurable neurological disease.

Meanwhile, a new drug dealer is gaining territory in Paris. Guillaume Leanour is trying to perfect a new type of “speed”. He is aiming to flood the capital with it, via his peddlers - illegal immigrants who have been picked up by dealer networks. But a special infiltration unit is monitoring Leanour. At its helm, “the Queen” coordinates embedded agents.

September 1998. Victor and Serge are leading a quiet life as a couple. Victor has become a talented architect, and remains close to Aurélie, who is the single-mother of a baby to which he is godfather. On the face of it, everything is going fine. Yet the passion between Victor and Serge has gradually faded over time.

Serge is very involved running an LGBT charity, where he takes in Basile, 17, who is provocative yet lost. His parents threw him out when they found out he was gay.
Meanwhile, Victor is in charge of his first project. On the building site, he runs into Selim, who has become a foreman. Time stands still. Selim says he regrets his behavior back then, but is happy with the choice he made: He’s married and has started a family. Meeting this old lover destabilizes Victor, and awakens his teenage desire.
 
 

Passing himself off as a potential buyer, Michel has infiltrated the dealers’ network. His fits are getting worse. Soudoumbé, one of the illegal immigrant peddlers, was arrested by the police, but managed to dump his stash.

Shortly afterwards, he leads the dealers to the person that picked it up – Clara. Michel and the Queen decide to flip Soudoumbé to help them bring the network down. Leanour’s henchman finds out Clara’s address and goes to her flat to recover the drugs.

In the ring, Céline discovers a new side of herself. She feels so empowered that she starts to consider wrestling as a way of supporting her family while her husband hovers between life and death.

But presently, she finds herself attracted to her coach Michel. Selma joins the "National Party", but is too embarrassed to tell her friends. Their former colleague Agathe has found a man she can trust and plans to bring her daughter over from Mali. Meanwhile, Nathalie yields to Bernard's advances, and accepts money from him in exchange for secret rendez-vous. All this takes place in the run-up to the local elections: the wrestling tournament has become the backdrop for a political contest. 

January 2013. Victor is an accomplished architect. He never has much time for his son, Diego, a kid with a strong will who’s in his final year at high school. Serge is back living with Victor and Diego, and things are very clear. Together, they form a kind of undefined blended family.

When Diego is called in by the principal for fighting with his classmate, Paul, who made racist and homophobic comments, it is Serge who comes in to receive the lecture from the headmistress.
 
As in any father/son relationship, Victor and Diego sometimes have a hard time getting along. Diego has forged a secret bond with his grandfather, Charles, who still has a strained relationship with Victor. Despite his solitude since Martine died, Charles is clearly not part of Victor’s life. 
 
 

Other dealers are attempting to take control of Leanour’s market. Backed into a corner, and unable to pay his supplier, he decides to offload as many hits as possible by opening a shooting gallery.

Soudoumbé has to steal the money from the street sales so that Michel and the Queen can pay Leanour for his drugs. But Soudoumbé is slow to act, and as a result, Michel and the Queen arrive empty handed.

The wrestling tournament is nearing its close, and the atmosphere is increasingly tense. The finals will determine who goes on to represent the town in national contests. 

But in addition, the National Party are using the tournament for political ends, playing on stereotypes and whipping up tensions that spill over into violence. Agathe is eliminated from the running by a racist attack. Her daughter decides to stay in Mali. Selma has become a poster girl for the National Party: rejected by her friends, she watches helplessly as her family disintegrates. When Céline's husband Pierre comes home from hospital, she is torn between following her own desires and salvaging her marriage and family. Nathalie cannot stand being a jobseeker any longer. Despite the huge difficulties she faces, she decides to pursue her dream of becoming a designer, even if she has to starve along the way.
