Life is hectic and unpredictable for Eleonore Schönborn, 95 – born in Czechoslovakia in the 1920s. Fascinated by her eventful life, Austrian writer Robert Schneider decided to faithfully tell her story. Through it he explores the theme of exile – which echoes current events.

It only took an hour for tragedy to strike her: she was expelled from her country in 1945 – she left her home and ran away with her children. She found refuge in Austria. Schruns – in the Vorarlberg region – became her new homeland.

Between narrative compression and visual expansion, this one-hour film skillfully pieces together the career spanning five decades of an unclassifiable artist who left his stamp on the art world.

With his compressions, his sculptures in wrought iron, his giant digits and his expansions, César blew apart the bedrock of classical sculpture and laid the foundations of a modern and spectacular kind of art that is firmly anchored in its time.
A brilliant and radical craftsman, adored by the media and snubbed by his peers, the creator of France’s annual film awards’ trophy – that bears his name – even stated that the artist’s hand was no longer necessary to create works of art.
To mark the 20th anniversary of César’s death and the retrospective of his work held by the Centre Pompidou in Paris, a look back on his life and work.

This is the history of a revolutionary painter struggling against the prejudices of his time, and the relationships he maintained with the artists of his era. Over his 86-year lifespan,  Kupka (1871-1957) lived through one of the richest periods in the history of art - the early 20th century.

This film sets out to render accessible to all the work of a painter who did not oppose the intellectual to the sensitive, nor artistic strategy to an artist’s spontaneous gestures. It provides a sensitive approach to abstraction, explaining how a few artists of the early 20th century - strangely all Slav and marked by Spiritism (Kupka, Kandinsky, Malevich) - managed to revolutionise painting by abandoning figuration in favour of a purer and freer relationship to the world of shape.

China has been the biggest art seller in the entire world since 2012. Yet they remain relatively unknown compared to these numbers. Who are these artists? What drives them and how do they circumvent censorship?

Contemporary Chinese art took off spectacularly after Mao’s death. Artists have revisited Western art and some have hijacked Communist propaganda, supplementing it with a vitriolic critic of Western consumerism currently sweeping the country. Art is well placed to observe the excesses of Chinese society and it has become the flag bearer for aspirations to freedom. These contemporary works symbolize people’s wounds and hardships, as well as state violence.
Although two artists – Basquiat and Koons – account for 50% of the American market, China has placed 47 artists in the top 100 – nearly half of them are newcomers.
Through personal encounters with the most original and avant-garde artists – in their workshops or during performances – this film sets out to understand their work and what motivates them as well as their fight against censorship.

Mathieu Amalric films Joann Sfar at work. A humorous insight into the world of the author of French comic strip "Le Chat du Rabbin".

Mathieu Amalric takes up a unique opportunity to accompany the prolific French cartoonist Joann Sfar to some of the places where he sketches his characters: in front of Nénette the Orangutan's cage at the Jardin des Plantes zoo in Paris, at the Rungis fish market, in a dissection lab at the Faculty of Medicine, in a restaurant, in a bar.
Sketching all the while, Sfar speaks about his work, about the need to draw from nature, and about the frustration he experiences at never being able to capture exactly what he really sees and the way in which this frustration spurs his imagination. The sequences are interspersed with the reading of (very appropriately) chosen extracts from the cartoonist's diary "Carnets", published by the Association.

Faced with racist caricatures, African-American painters decided to present a different image of their community than the one imposed by the degrading stereotypes of a brutally racist society.

Ignored and marginalised, they had to wait a century before they finally won recognition. This film tells the story of how African-American artists took back their image, from the abolition of slavery to the present day.
