Suleiman Baraka, who is passionate about astrophysics, is raising young Gazans’ awareness of the mysteries of the Milky Way.
On a summer’s night in Gaza, about a hundred silhouettes, of varying sizes, gather around a telescope. The group of young Gazan astronomers-in-the-making are observing the moon. A scene such as this would have been unimaginable just a few years ago, because the Israeli army were holding all astrophysics equipment.
Chairholder of the Astronomy Chair at Unesco, Suleiman Baraka has facilitated change. The 52-year-old Gazan wants to show children of Gaza that the sky is not only a source of destruction and death. By making them aware of the mysteries of the Milky Way, he is restoring a sense of wonder and awe regarding its infinite nature.
