Fire dancing in Papua New Guinea or climbing to the top of the Ethiopian cliffs to introduce one’s child to God: this series reveals how some people today still practice rituals that structure their lives and become, beyond a simple social bond, a structuring force and a source of culture.

In societies that struggle to find their bearings, rituals - whether pagan or mysterious - are of particular importance when people are confronted with the unknown, illness, death, not knowing what tomorrow is made of. Rituals help organise chaos, warding off our fears and bringing to light the meaning in our lives.
Anthropologist, Anne-Sylvie Malbrancke, helps us understand and experience these moments with those who practice them.

For the past two years, Russian hackers have been on the front page of Western media. On the international scene, they have become the bad guy. Russian hackers are the new symbol and the figurehead of an aggressive Russia that is not content to spy but to attack.

In the United States, they are accused of interfering in the 2016 presidential campaign by hacking emails from the American Democratic Party. In Kiev, Ukraine, cyberattacks wreak havok. The culprits are designated: Russia and its mercenaries, hackers. But who are they really? What logic do they respond to and who controls them? In this parallel reality, where spies, paranoid and discreet geeks compete for territory, the film tells an invisible war, where viruses are terrifying weapons and information a key issue. A war that can destabilize our world, touch all of us and where Russia advances its pawns with determination.

In 1960, the British Crown sued the publishing house Penguin Books in order to ban D.H. Lawrence's “Lady Chatterley's Lover” – a graphic account of an aristocrat and her gamekeeper's carnal love. For six days, prosecutors and lawyers discussed the literary qualities of a book that talks about sex without taboos, celebrates nature, and advocates harmony between beings.

To the often comical and even grotesque indignation of the prosecution are opposed the sincere pleas in favor of “Lady Chatterley's Lover”. The heart of a literary work will be scrutinized, from the intentions of its author – the son of a Midlands miner – to its social and political significance.
But how obscene is this brave literary endeavor to write sex as it is, in its naked truth? And what can we say about this depiction of nature with the same passion, as a metaphor for human sensuality?
Based on selected excerpts from the trial, the film offers to explore – free from its contemporary moral confines – what made Lady Chatterley a literary and popular myth that has gone above and beyond its century and borders. And since its trial in 1960 defused the scandal to reveal the true dimension of this work, the film seeks to reveal all its implications, the whole truth, its entire significance. It also enables us to assess its influence in today's society.

Pigalle in 2017 is like a city-world that repeats itself – triumphant gentrification and engulfing emptiness – while it also has been hailed as a magnificent locality from its inception; it is an incredibly mixed territory and a sort of creative and artistic anomaly within Paris’ framework.

Nowadays, Pigalle is called SoPi (for South Pigalle); the district has become a trademark. The hooker bars have become trendy cafés. We have kept the names and peeled everything else off. It could be Soho, or London, or anywhere. In the big cities, the hipsters’ reproduction of their business model and codes leads to an urban standardization that often excludes the poorer classes.
Through a unique movie installation (a pocket cinema on the main square) “Le Pigalle” will gather locals and witnesses of the district’s rich history. It will be like a furtive and popular cultural re-appropriation of the area.
Our film will tell the story of a square, a district, and a people like a vibrant convergence of Parisian culture. The pivotal moments of its transformation will be reenacted – the Trente Glorieuses, the 70s crisis, the 80s anguish, the gentrification from 2000 onwards – as a modern retelling of Pigalle’s vivid tale.

On 1 November in the cemeteries of the Sacatépequez region of Guatemala, the people are not sad for the dead. They communicate with the deceased in a unique and poetic way, using kites. The Guatemalans talk to their ancestors through strings and small pieces of colored paper, fluttering in the wind.

This ritual is the result of a combination of cultures. There is the All Saints tradition of the Catholic calendar, but also a belief in the power of kites that comes from Maya culture, the civilization that preceded colonization.
This all gives rise to a very colorful and lively celebration. They younger ones have adopted this ritual by launching a kind of challenge to make bigger and bigger kites every year. And this year, the biggest one is 18 meters across.

In Madagascar, from July to September, the inhabitants of the island profit from the dry season to organize a traditional rite: the Famadihana, or the “return of the dead”. This year, Ndriana is exhuming four members of her family. Among them, her father, who died 20 years previously.

According to local tradition, the Famadihana is an essential part of the ancestral cult and a chance for families to come together for a big celebration that lasts two days. During the ceremony, the bodies are removed from the vault and displayed to the family, the guests, and the population of the village. After having changed the shrouds, the descendants happily carry the exhumed body of the deceased on their shoulders, dancing to express their delight. The Famadihana ritual brings together the living and celebrates the victory of life over death.

Every year in Tangbyon, an important ritual sees thousands of Burmans come to ask their mediums to dance, so they may contact the Nats, spirits that are able to offer them a better future

Daw Kyar Ma has been taking part in this ritual for more than 20 years, but this year, she has come to ask the Nats to heal her husband who is having problems with his pancreas.

Medium Ko Myint Thu will dance for her and transmit her prayer to the Nats.
In Myanmar, most mediums are men, transvestites, or homosexuals. Literally, “Nat Kadaw” means “husband of Nat”. In this country, where homosexuality is still illegal, the ritual provides a space where homosexuals, transvestites and transgender people can exist without hiding.

“First marriage and then love.” This Indian proverb describes Indian society fairly accurately, and how the tradition of marriage is experienced in the country. In India, people don’t just marry whoever they want. It is the family that decides, and most marriages are arranged. It is called the Shaadi.

Meenal lives in Jaipur, in the state of Rajasthan, is a modern, educated, young woman, who has traveled, who is financially independent, and who asked her mother to find her a husband.
They used a web application to find Vineet. He responds to all the criteria but most importantly, the two families are from the same caste, the Brahmin.
Meenal has only met him twice, and in a few days’ time, she’s going to give up her entire life to follow him.
