In the Périgord Noir, in truffle country, the village of Domme overlooks the Dordogne river from a height of some 250 metres. The former stronghold was founded in 1281 by Philip the Bold during the crusade against the Albigensians and the Cathar heretics.

This royal bastide has had one of the richest and most varied histories in all the Périgord, and has retained traces of the passage of the Knights Templar in the 14th century. On October 13th 1307, after what Voltaire would call the « Templars’ Saint Bartholemew’s night », 70 people were imprisoned in the Tower Gate in Domme. As they awaited judgement, and execution, the templars engraved some extraordinary graffiti on the cell walls, which some 700 years later continues to fascinate visitors.
