A voyage into the unknown, based on Arnold BÖCKLIN’s work, in a seemingly banal apartment : within a few minutes, civilisation disintegrates, buildings crumble, the earth is flooded and we find ourselves in company of a boatman who guides us to the isle of the dead.

Arnold BÖCKLIN’s painting, “The Isle of the Dead”, was completed between 1880 and 1886 in six different versions. It combines the pictorial influences of Symbolism and Romanticism, and for the first time in the history of art, depicts death as an island.
The painting has become more famous than its creator and has fascinated Freud, Marguerite Yourcenar but also Hitler and Lenin. It is inspired by Rachmaninov’s eponymous symphonic poem (featured as the soundtrack of the film). Reproductions of this painting were often found in the bourgeois interiors of the early XXth century.
